CRUISING HINTS: On the Canal du Nivernais you will find small manual locks and from time to time a lifting bridge which you open yourself. The Yonne on the other hand is a wide river, easy to cruise with electrical operated locks.
However beware of the unusual Yonne locks with sloping sides, where a crew member should be put ashore before entering.
If you opt for a cruise in the Loire valley you will appreciate the gentle slope of the Canal Latéral ŕ la Loire with very few locks.
