Once used to transport oak from Limousin to the barrel makers of Cognac, the
Charente River is a tranquil, beautiful watercourse, far away from the haunts of
tourism, its bank ornamented with medieval churches, chateaux and mellow stone
villages with excellent restaurants.

and other remains - Cognac - brandy houses and old town Angouleme - fortified
