French Canal Boat in Charente--region 2
~ The prettiest stream in the kingdom~

Once used to transport oak from Limousin to the barrel makers of
Cognac, the
Charente River is a tranquil, beautiful watercourse, far away from the haunts of
tourism, its bank ornamented with medieval churches, chateaux and mellow stone
villages with excellent restaurants.
Places of Special Interest: Saintes - old Roman town with amphitheatre
and other remains - Cognac - brandy houses and old town Angouleme - fortified
city, lovely cathedral - Rochefort - fortified harbour.
Regional Cuisine: Cognac, Pineau, Loire and Bordeaux wines, Seafood,
especially oysters Beef, goat cheese and snails.
On the Charante thee are no lock-keepers. But it is not difficult to operate them yourself. If you have not been boating before we recommend you do not go below St Savinien as the river becomes tidal at that point.
